Recreation opportunities on
the Georgia coast are abundant
Ample opportunities for outdoor recreation improve a community’s quality of life. The connection between nature and the outdoors is important for our health and happiness, and research shows that communities with parks, trails, and access to water have stronger economies. Whether hunting, fishing, or bird watching, outdoor recreation can also help maintain healthy wildlife populations.
Georgia’s local and state governments—as well as federal, non-government organizations, and land trusts – have made significant investments in infrastructure and land in an effort to provide opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors.
Our baseline data reveal the locations and quantity of public spaces that offer the opportunity for people to spend time in our water and on our land. In future years, we will survey the public about their use of these spaces and the quality of their experience.
