Agricultural Production
+ Access to Local Foods
Healthy farmland provides significant benefits to our environment and nearby residents. Research shows that people who know the source of their food are willing to pay higher prices for their produce and are more connected to their environment.
To evaluate this indicator, we analyzed overall agriculture production numbers and acres in the six coastal counties. We attempted to evaluate the quantity of local produce consumed, but these data were not available.
What We Learned
Finding: Large-scale farms in coastal Georgia are not as lucrative as elsewhere in the state, but the number of small farms is increasing.
Data regarding consumption of local produce was unavailable, but in the future we hope to include information about where people get their vegetables and meat.
GCC Goals
Protect, connect, and enhance environments for coastal plants and animals to adapt to changes in sea level and benefit the community.

Cultivate opportunities to enjoy and recreate in the special places and historic communities along Georgia’s coast.
Promote economic development that respects natural environments and preserves the character of our coastal communities.
